Material guide

Material picks for Framework laptops

Framework laptops are built for repairability and customization — the gear logo, modular ports, and aluminum unibody construction all reward material choices that respect the understated design.

Satin Aluminum and Brushed Aluminum are the most natural picks — they read as alternate factory finishes rather than decorations. Matte Black transforms the machine more noticeably while keeping the clean geometry intact.

For character, Prism and Frosty Vanilla add subtle color-shift effects that pair well with the enthusiast positioning. Black Carbon Fiber shifts the feel toward performance aesthetics if that fits your build.

The Framework gear logo cutout is usually preserved so it stays visible through the skin.

Installing skins on a Framework laptop

Framework laptops have very clean geometry — the modular port system on the sides means no fixed port cutouts to worry about, and the lid is straightforward. The install guide marks tack points for each model.

Start by aligning the lid using tack points — the gear logo cutout is typically the primary reference. Work the squeegee outward from those points. The bottom panel comes next, with the modular expansion card slots as alignment references on the sides.

Room temperature around 70°F works best. Every Framework model we cover has a dedicated install video posted online.

Frequently asked about Framework Skins

How long does it take to install a laptop skin?

Most installs take 20–40 minutes for a careful first-timer. The install video for your specific model walks through each panel. We include two skins per order, so if the first install doesn't go as planned, you have a second to try again.

What if the skin doesn't fit my laptop?

Every template is designed on the actual device before release, so fit issues are rare. If something's off, reach out — we'll offer install help or process a return on unused, non-custom orders. Check the install guide for cutout reference before installing if you're unsure.

What happens to the skin if I upgrade the mainboard?

The external chassis stays the same across most mainboard upgrades — so the skin keeps fitting. If you switch to a significantly different chassis (like Framework 13 to Framework 16), you'll need a different skin.

Can I remove the skin later?

Our skins are designed to peel off with heat from a hair dryer. Apply gentle heat to the edge, lift slowly, and the skin should come up without leaving residue. Always test with low heat first on textured or painted chassis.

Does the skin work with the modular expansion cards?

Yes. The skin is cut to fit around the expansion card slots on both sides. You can swap USB-C, HDMI, SD card, and other modules in and out as normal with the skin installed.
